Just make a short-cut to the D2R.exe file and place it on your desktop to start the game. This bypasses the battle.net launcher. (after you do something about your internet connection.)

However I found that if you go to the games program folder on your computer and select the executable application directly then the game will launch. For me the application was Hellfire.exe in the Diablo Hellfire/Hellfire program folder.
