After the 2020 elections, Iran was behind a website filled with death threats against U.S. election officials. And during this year’s election, the FBI foiled a plot by Iran to pay an assassin $1 million to kill Donald Trump.

Russia, and to a lesser extent Iran, will most likely flood social media with misinformation on Election Day and for weeks afterward, the agencies said.

U.S. intelligence agencies said Russia is expected to "intensify" its disinformation campaigns "through election day."

Eight years after Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, foreign influence with American voters has grown more sophisticated. That could have outsize consequences in the 2024 race.

The effort aims to “undermine public confidence in the integrity of U.S. elections and stoke divisions among Americans.”
