Chicago officials are expected to announce charges Wednesday in the fatal shooting of Officer Enrique Martinez, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Monday night on the city's South Side.

Chicago police Officer Enrique Martínez and his partner responded to a block in the South Side’s East Chatham neighborhood on Monday evening for what eventually turned out to be a call with false information.

Darion McMillian is accused of shooting Martinez with a handgun equipped with an illegal "switch" that allows it to fire like a machine gun. Martinez, 26, was just shy of three years on the job.

The man charged with killing both a Chicago police officer and another man appeared Thursday at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse. WGN's Emmy Victor reports on the story. More info:

Martinez was fatally shot during a traffic stop. The shooter fled on foot but was apprehended shortly after, police said. Charges are pending.

Darion McMillian, 23, from Harvey, faces felony charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the shooting Monday night in the 8000 block of South Ingleside Avenue, Police Supt. Larry Snelling announced Wednesday.
