Barely halfway through his five-year contract, the St. Louis Cardinals are moving catcher Willson Contreras to first base and some DH, executive John Mozeliak told reporters Wednesday at the GM meetings.

After nine years as a catcher, St. Louis Cardinals veteran Willson Contreras will navigate unfamiliar territory in 2025. The Cardinals are moving Contreras to first base effective next year, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told reporters Wednesday. Contreras, 32, has played 11 games at first base in his entire career.

Five players took time in the field at first base for the Cardinals in 2024, though three of those five combined for only 14 innings.
