Foreigners who are allowed to come to the United States without a visa could soon be required to submit information about their social media, email accounts and extensive family history to the Department of Homeland Security before being approved for travel.

The US is proposing that foreign visitors provide their social media history over the last five years to enter the country, including those from Australia, Germany, Japan and the UK who can now enter without a visa.

There are dozens of different types of visas people coming to the United States can seek to clear their entry into the country. The State Department lumps them into two categories: nonimmigrant visas and immigrant visas.
