A Florida zoo announced the birth of an eastern bongo, a critically endangered antelope native to sub-Saharan Africa.

“Both mom and calf are thriving, with the little one nursing well and growing stronger each day,” the wildlife park wrote. “Eastern bongos are critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. Each birth is a vital step toward their conservation.”

The healthy male Eastern bongo calf was born last week to first-time mother, Cayenne, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens announced Tuesday.

The Roger Williams Park Zoo announced Tuesday that the elephants will eventually move to a new Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited facility to live out the remainder of their lives together in a larger herd.

African elephants Alice, Ginny, and Kate, who turn 40 this year, will be moved so they may enjoy the companionship of other elephants as they age, Roger Williams Park Zoo officials said.

Roger Williams Park Zoo's three African elephants will move to a new home in 2027, one that provides the care and companionship they need as they age.
