The FAA has begun an investigation into a midair incident involving a United Airlines Boeing 737-900ER and a Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-300.

According to Delta, Delta Flight 419 traveling from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, was canceled after crew members mistakenly deployed the Boeing 767’s emergency slide and the flight crew timed out before the aircraft could be repaired.

The FAA said alerts went off onboard letting pilots know they were close to another plane and 'corrective instructions' were issued to both flight crews

The close call between the United and Delta flights at the Phoenix airport comes amid an increase in plane near-collisions.

Tuesday night, a newly delivered Airbus A350-900 will depart Delta's Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) megahub sporting an all-new cabin appearance — one that will slowly become the standard look on Delta's planes over the coming years.

The planes, carrying more than 350 people, experienced "a loss of required separation" while preparing to land at the same Phoenix airport, the FAA said.

The two flights, United Airlines Flight 1724 and Delta Air Lines Flight 1070 came too close to each other while arriving at the airport.

The pilots talked to air traffic controllers who appear to have directed the planes to "resequence," and flight data appears to show both making a circle before landing safely.
