The Vermont senators and representative gave a joint statement expressing their concern of this "authoritarian" decision to freeze federal grants.

Agent David “Chris” Maland died in a shooting following a traffic stop, the FBI said. A second person killed in the incident was a German national in the country on a current visa, authorities said.

Local law enforcement, state officials and the Border Patrol itself issued statements in the wake of the tragic incident.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot and killed in northern Vermont Monday afternoon, the FBI said in a statement later that evening. The shooting took place on Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vt.,

FBI Albany said they are investigating "an alleged assault on a federal officer in connection with a fatal shooting involving a U.S. Border Patrol Agent."

The fatal encounter occurred around 3:15 p.m. EST Monday on Interstate 91 in Coventry, about 13 miles south of the Canadian border.

Interstate 91 between Exits 27 and 26 is closed in both directions after Vermont State Police said a U.S. Border Patrol Agent was shot. The roadway was closed at 3:30 p.m. following what Vermont State Police called an "evolving police incident".

Officials said the agent was shot on Interstate 91, which was closed for several hours near the border with Canada.

The woman charged in the death of a Border Patrol agent in northern Vermont was back in court on Thursday morning following her arrest last week. Teresa Youngblut appeared in U.S. District Court in Burlington for a detention hearing following her initial appearance earlier this week.
