Utah lawmakers, who voted to ban fluoride from drinking water, are considering a new cavity-prevention idea for Utahns to chew on: Giving school kids and prisoners xylitol gum three times a day.

Arkansas State Sen. Bryan King has been trying to repeal a 2011 mandate that added fluoride to most public drinking water.

The sponsor of the Utah legislation, Republican Rep. Stephanie Gricius, acknowledged fluoride has benefits, but said it was an issue of “individual choice” to not have it in the water.
