What are the ramifications of being without power? The outage will either be small or large and widespread. In the small outage standby generators are nice, but (for me) was not worth the expense. In a wide-spread outage, the benefits of a generator are limited because of fuel and the access limitation on other services.

I would say that 2,500 sf falls on the low end of the typical house WITH A STANDBY GEN. Mar 6, 2021 · better is a point of view. My system with a portable generator is way cheaper than any full blown standby unit with auto switching. I simply do not want any generator firing up on its own. My house has a transfer switch for a portable generator and a transfer switch for a standby generator... but no generator.

As noted, 8KW is small, only runs my well, refrigerator, freezer, boiler, internet, a few lights,and outlets. So emergency stuff. When it breaks would likely get a 12KW or so, maybe Generac again. 2.
