May 27, 2019 · Gain stunning views of Salida and the Arkansas Valley from the top of this hill that rises above downtown. Tenderfoot Mountain, more commonly referred to as “S-Mountain” for the white concrete “S” on its side, rises over 500 feet above downtown Salida.

There are 11, 12, 13, and 14-thousand foot mountain peaks all around Salida, but the most dramatic can be found to the northwest. If my bearings are correct, this cluster of peaks includes Mt. Shavano (14,229 feet/4,337 meters) and Mt. Antero (14,269 feet/4,349 meters — the 10th highest peak in Colorado).

The low hills just north of downtown Salida offer a wide variety of nice hiking trails – everything from rocky singletrack to the smooth dirt road that spirals to the top of Tenderfoot Mountain. It’s a perfect area to explore on your own.
